To improve literacy, numeracy, retention, and empowerment of children and youth in ECE and lower primary education through school and community based education support, advocacy, and youth empowerment programs.

Every project connects learning, teacher support, and community involvement to create lasting change.

FSM strengthens early reading and writing by supporting teachers with effective instructional approaches, increasing access to quality reading materials, and fostering a culture of reading in schools and communities. Our literacy work helps children learn not only to read words, but also to understand and enjoy what they read.

FSM recognizes that literacy and numeracy are equally important building blocks for future learning. Our numeracy work focuses on improving the quality of mathematics teaching in the early grades and helping children develop strong number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical understanding.

FSM believes that learning does not happen in classrooms alone. We work with parents, caregivers, community leaders, and education stakeholders to create environments that support children’s learning and address barriers that affect school participation and achievement.

We develop, pilot, evaluate, and document innovative approaches to foundational learning. By generating evidence and engaging with policymakers and education partners, FSM contributes to stronger education systems and more effective teaching practices across Zambia.

THREAD is an early grade literacy initiative that strengthens foundational reading and comprehension skills by supporting teachers, learners, and communities with practical, evidence-based literacy approaches and access to engaging reading materials.
In Zambia, many learners reach Grade 5 without the ability to read and understand simple texts. While the Primary Literacy Programme (PLP) has helped improve foundational reading skills, classroom instruction often focuses more on decoding words than on understanding meaning. THREAD addresses this gap by equipping teachers with structured literacy pedagogy, ongoing coaching, and access to high-quality reading resources that promote both decoding and comprehension. Through a partnership with the South African Institute for Distance Education’s African Storybook initiative, teachers and learners can access thousands of free, culturally relevant storybooks in English and local languages. These resources help learners engage with meaningful texts, develop comprehension skills, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading.

Drawing on research and classroom experience, FSM aims to address instructional challenges that hinder mathematics learning, including ineffective lesson sequencing, cognitive overload, and weak progression of concepts. We work to promote teaching approaches that help learners understand mathematics rather than simply memorize procedures.
Future Numeracy initiatives will focus on:
– Scaling evidence-based approaches through partnerships;
– Teacher professional development
– Learning progressions in mathematics
– Classroom-based research and innovation
– Numeracy assessment tools
– Development of effective teaching resources
